I would recommend this book over any devotional book I've every come beyond. It is a useful book on several fronts: as an introduction to the puritans, every bit a brusque simply deep resource for family devotions, every bit a quick devotion for those with very little time (mothers!). This is an excellent work. The daily portions are piece of cake to read and can be done then in less than 5 minutes, and this is accomplished without sacrificing anything to content! Merely I take three complaints which go on me from giving it v stars: 1) It is style likewise expensive. 2) It includes writings from Richard Baxter. His theology, particularly on justification and sanctification, is very dangerous and should not be in such a piece of work. three) A downfall of all devotionals: sometimes the context of some topics is left out for space and it can be a bit confusing/misleading if 1 is not already familiar with that item writing or writer. Other than this, a really, really good book. ...more

I call back this the best puritan-based devotional book I accept read so far (yes, I call back it is better than The Valley of Vision). The simply "con" of this book is that there is no digital version of it. Hopefully, The Banner of Truth volition set up that in the future.

My daily devotional for 2020, and it was solid food for the soul.

Each twenty-four hours's reading is about 2 mins 30 secs long (I know, since I audio recorded the passage each day), so it is definitely doable for busy Christians. The pick of Puritan authors, themes, and topics is thoughtfully done, with a helpful index page at the stop.

You would scarcely find a better devotional, if you are looking to abound in the Christian faith. The ultimate compliment that I tin pay is that I'm starting Vol 2 for 2021

Format: Paperback

Synopsis: Voices From the Past is a collection of excerpts from various Puritan sermons and writings. I have looked up a few of the original sources, and Richard Rushing has done an excellent chore of condensing them downwards into short daily readings.

What I Thought: My method for reading Voices From the By was to read only the entry for the twenty-four hours, even if I had gotten behind. That was a mistake, which I only realized when I began reading Volume 2 and read all the pages, even if I fell behind. Reading every page is important because some of the excerpts are split over ii or more days. Not reading every page gave me the impression that some of the entries started or ended abruptly.

My only other complaint with Voices From the Past is that the Scripture verses for each day didn't always seem to work well with whatsoever the topic was. Some days the extract and verse went together very well, and other days I was left wondering how the poesy correlated to the entry. It's possible that reading every entry would accept solved this annoyance.

Despite my error, I was encouraged and bedevilled by what I read. I decided to read information technology again in 2022 because I had missed many days in 2018. It was just every bit proficient the 2d year. In fact, I probably would have read it for a third twelvemonth if Volume Two had not been fabricated bachelor.

The Lesser Line: I would recommend Voices From the Past to anyone looking for a daily devotional volume. Merely brand sure you read every page! This has been a great introduction to the Puritans for me; I would also recommend it to someone interested in Puritan writings but not sure where to first. I have at present started a list of sermons and works that I would like to read thanks to this book.

Each of the brusque readings (approximately 350 words), begins with Scripture poetry. The author selected the verse co-ordinate to the theme of the reading. At the terminate of each reading is the Puritan author and a citation from where the author pulled the reading. This is by far the all-time devotional I have ever read. A daily dose of the puritans is ideal,
and through this book you can learn a few more than authors you want to look into further. The selections are excellent, and every bit always, the Puritan writers are incomparable. Convicting and apt every day. Richard Rushing has given the reformed Christians in the world a wonderful daily source of biblical truth.
